When you approach a craps table, the sheer number of betting options can be overwhelming. However, the key to long-term success lies in focusing on bets with the lowest house edge. The Pass Line bet, for example, carries a house edge of just 1.41%, making it a staple for any player. Similarly, the Come bet mirrors the Pass Line and offers the same favorable odds. For those seeking even better returns, placing odds behind these bets—known as taking odds—reduces the house edge to nearly zero. This is the only bet in the casino without a built-in advantage for the house, so always maximize your odds bet when your bankroll allows.
Another essential tip is to avoid prop bets in the center of the table, such as Any 7 (16.67% house edge) or Hardways (up to 11.1% house edge). These may promise big payouts, but they consistently drain your bankroll. Instead, stick to the perimeter where the smarter money lives. By mastering these foundational bets, you create a strategy that is both simple and statistically sound.
Effective bankroll management is the backbone of any craps session. A common rule of thumb is to bring at least 20 times the minimum bet to the table. For a $10 table, that means a $200 bankroll. This buffer allows you to weather the inevitable swings without going broke too quickly. Additionally, divide your session into smaller units—for example, five $40 increments—and quit after losing one unit. This prevents chasing losses, which is a leading cause of big losses.
Setting win limits is equally important. Decide on a profit goal, such as doubling your starting bankroll, and walk away when you hit it. Human nature tempts you to keep playing after a big win, but the house edge ensures that the longer you play, the more likely you are to lose. Use a stop-loss and stop-win system: if you hit your loss limit for the day, leave immediately. Discipline separates successful craps players from those who leave empty-handed.
Dice control, also known as precision shooting, is a controversial but intriguing technique. The premise is that by holding and throwing the dice consistently—using a soft, controlled toss that reduces randomness—you can influence outcomes. While casinos are skeptical, some players claim success by practicing at home and focusing on a consistent grip and landing spot. Even modest improvements in your dice control can shift the odds slightly in your favor, particularly when combined with placing odds bets.
Another advanced approach is recognizing patterns on the table. Craps results are random in the short term, but streaks like hot rolls (multiple passes) or cold tables (frequent sevens) can influence your bet placement. During a hot roll, increase your Come and Pass Line bets modestly, but avoid jumping to high-risk bets like field bets or hardways. Conversely, during a cold streak, reduce your bets or switch to Don’t Pass (1.36% house edge) to capitalize on the trend. Always remember, though, that no pattern is guaranteed—discipline remains paramount.
Finally, consider using a controlled betting progression like the Martingale system only with caution. Doubling your bet after a loss can quickly escalate, so set a maximum sequence length (e.g., three doubles) and stick to it. The best players combine technical skill with emotional intelligence, knowing when to press their bets and when to step aside.
